Supported Independent Living

What is Supported Independent Living (SIL)?

SIL is residential disability services, it is assistance with daily tasks to help support or develop the skills of an individual to live as independently as possible. These supports are provided to a participant in their home, regardless of property ownership; it can be in a shared or individual arrangement.

SIL supports are everyday tasks like cleaning, cooking and personal care, as well as:

  • Going to appointments
  • Taking up a hobby
  • Learning to catch public transport.

Will I be included in household decisions?

Yes! All our Residents are involved in household decisions.

This can be done in different ways depending on what each household prefers. As an example, in some houses, the housemates choose to sit down for a meeting each week to make decisions about their home.

Most importantly, all Residents are involved in the selection of their support staff.

What type of properties does Ability Hut offer?

We provide disability residential services in small group homes.  We will work with you to find something that’s just right.

Who will I be living with?

We know it’s important that people get along.  All current Residents are involved in the selection of a new Resident coming into their home.

What is not covered by SIL?

The NDIS does not fund the cost of rent, board, transport, and other day-to-day expenses such as food and activities.

Please feel free to contact us to learn more about SIL, discuss eligibility and how to access this funding via the NDIS.
